Williamtown (YWLM)

Airspace

WLM ADC administers the WLM MIL CTR airspace from SFC to A015. WLM TCU administers the overlying airspace from A015 to F125.

Tower Closed Procedures

When WLM TCU is offline, WLM MIL CTR (Class C SFC to A065) reverts to Class G, and WLM MIL CTR (Class C A065 to F125) reverts to Class E. CTAF procedures apply at YWLM.

Departures

VFR aircraft should expect a visual departure on track to their first tracking point.

IFR civil aircraft should expect to be issued with a SID as per below:

Aircraft Type Runway First Waypoint SID
All All KEXAR KEXAR SID
All All LIMLO LIMLO SID
All All MONDO MONDO SID
All All UBSON UBSON SID

Note

When the R596 restricted area is active, aircraft planned via UBSON and departing Runway 12 should expect the UBSON BRAVO SID.

IFR military aircraft should expect to be issued with a SID as per below:

Aircraft Type Runway Tracking Point SID
All All Gates 1 or 2 PEPPER SID
All All Gates 3-7 CLASSIC SID

Additionally, aircraft planned for the western training areas will be cleared via the STORM coded clearance.

All other aircraft may be assigned a visual departure or WLM (Radar) SID.

Tip

Military SID charts are contained in the RAAF TERMA document.

Arrivals

An ILS is available to RWY 12. RNP, RNP(AR), and NDB approaches are available to both runways.

IFR aircraft can generally expect to be processed via a STAR for the following approach:

Runway Approach
RWY 12 ILS
RWY 30 RNP

During VMC, IFR aircraft may be processed via a visual approach with a relevant circuit join instruction.

Military aircraft may be cleared for the Stereo approach at pilot request or when nominated on the ATIS.

Initial and Pitch

The intial points are aligned with Taxiway A at the following locations.

RWY Initial Point Altitude
12 South-western tip of Grahamstown Dam A025
(A020 for PC21)
30 Intersection of the coast and extended Taxiway A centreline A025
(A020 for PC21)

Special Use Airspace

Military Gates

There are numerous military gates established throughout the WLM TMA to facilitate entry and exit to adjoining SUA.

Intended SUA TCU Exit Gate
M581 Gates 4-7
M582 Gate 6
M583 Lightning Gate (LG)
M584 Lightning Gate (LG)
R585A Gate 1
R585B Gate 9
R585C Gate 10
R585D Gate 11
R586 Gates 1-3

Note

Details of each gate can be found in the Williamtown FIHA.

Pilots shall include the desired departure gate when requesting clearance.

Phraseology

RPLC15 plans to enter the M581 MOA via Gate 7 for military training and airwork.
RPLC15: "Willy Delivery, RPLC15 for Gate 7, F120 for M581, request clearance."
WLM ACD: "RPLC15, Willy Delivery. Cleared Gate 7, CLASSIC departure. Climb via SID to F120, squawk 6001, departure frequency 135.7."

Salt Ash

The Salt Ash Air Weapons Range is located within the WLM MIL CTR, and is used for air-surface gunnery and bombing practice. It is entirely contained within R596.

The restricted area can be activated in two configurations according to the requirements of the operation. Only VFR aircraft are permitted.

Configuration Name Vertical Limits Notes
R596 High SFC - A130 Aircraft will remain on local QNH above A100
R596 Low SFC - A050

Aircraft departing YWLM for the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range should expect the SALT ASH departure, in lieu of a SID. On this departure, aircraft will maintain runway heading until turning between 2 TAC and 7.5 TAC WLM to enter the restricted area.

Phraseology

PTHR21: "Willy Delivery, PTHR21 for Salt Ash High, A100, transit not above A050, request clearance."
WLM ACD: "PTHR21, cleared Salt Ash runway 12 departure, transit A050 for operations in Salt Ash High, not above A100, squawk 6001."
PTHR21: "Cleared Salt Ash runway 12 departure, transit A050 for operations in Salt Ash High, not above A100, squawk 6001, PTHR21."

Note

Details of the coded clearance can be found in the Williamtown FIHA.

Western Training Areas

Aircraft departing to the western training areas intending to operate in CTA or obtain an airspace release from Brisbane Centre must nominate their preferred SUA and vertical dimensions to WLM ACD when requesting airways clearance.

Expect to be cleared via the STORM 1 coded clearance and track via the Thunder Corridor. On completion of operations in SUA, contact Brisbane Centre for onwards clearance and expect tracking via the STORM 2 coded clearance to YWLM.

Note

Details of the coded clearances can be found in the Williamtown FIHA.

VFR Procedures

VFR aircraft transiting to/from YWLM should plan via a VFR reporting point.

Aircraft intending to transit the WLM CTR should plan via the Coastal Route or Inland Lane.

Coastal Route

A lane of entry is available along the coastline, allowing aircraft to transit the zone from north to south (or vice versa). A clearance is required from WLM TCU prior to entering the CTR.

Direction Routing Altitude
Northbound NBB ANA PSS BRI SUG A005
Southbound SUG BRI PSS ANA NBB Not above A020 until ANA, then A005

Follow the coastline and remain over water at all times.

Phraseology

FWC: "Willy Approach, FWC, Cessna 172, 4nm south of NBB, A005, received Bravo, for the coastal route, request clearance"
WLM TCU: "FWC, squawk 0366, remain outside controlled airspace"
FWC: "Squawk 0366, remain outside controlled airspace, FWC"

WLM TCU: "FWC, identified, cleared coastal route northbound, maintain A005"
FWC: "Cleared coastal route northbound, maintain A005, FWC"

Details of the lane are available in the YWLM ERSA FAC and on the Williamtown VTC.

Note

Expect delays for clearance via the lane of entry during times of peak traffic into/out of YWLM.

Inland Lane

A lane of entry is available in the Class G airspace to the north of YWLM, allowing aircraft to transit the restricted airspace from north to south (or vice versa). No clearance is required to operate along the route.

Direction Routing Altitude
Either 1nm either side of the railway line between a position 2nm east of Dungog Township, through SRO, GCR, to WDU Not above A025

Details of the lane are available in the YWLM ERSA FAC and on the Williamtown VTC.
